Finding Courage When You Are Afraid

Fear has a way of showing up in the quiet moments. It whispers about what might happen, what could go wrong, and what we may not be strong enough to face. It can come as a sudden jolt, like a frightening diagnosis, or as a slow, steady worry that follows us from morning to night.

But God’s Word speaks to our fears with tenderness and authority. It does not scold us for feeling afraid. Instead, it points us to the One who is greater than anything we face. Throughout Scripture, it tells us, “Fear not,” and each time the reason is the same. God is with us.

Here are some Scriptures to encourage your heart when you feel afraid.

1. God Is With You

Isaiah 41:10

Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

Encouragement: God does not simply tell you to stop being afraid. He gives you the reason: His presence, His strength, and His help are with you now.

Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Encouragement: Courage is not the absence of fear. It is choosing to move forward because God goes with you.

Psalm 23:4

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Encouragement: Notice that the valley is real, but so is the Shepherd. You are not walking through the dark places alone.

2. God Is Greater Than What You Fear

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?

Encouragement: When God is your light, fear loses its power to keep you in the dark. He is the strength of your life, not just your helper in a crisis.

1 John 4:18

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

Encouragement: You are held by a perfect love. The more deeply you rest in His love for you, the less room fear has to take hold.

Romans 8:31

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Encouragement: Whatever stands against you, it does not stand taller than the God who stands with you.

3. God Gives Peace in Place of Fear

2 Timothy 1:7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Encouragement: It is important that we understand where fear comes from. Fear is not from God. Instead, He gives power, love, and a calm, steady mind.

Philippians 4:6-7

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Encouragement: Prayer turns worry into worship. As you hand your fears to God, His peace stands guard over your heart and mind.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Encouragement: The peace Jesus gives does not depend on your circumstances. It is a gift He places in your heart even in the middle of the storm.

4. Trust Is the Answer to Fear

Psalm 56:3-4

Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?

Encouragement: David admits he gets afraid. His answer is not to pretend otherwise, but he decided to trust God when fear rises.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

Encouragement: Fear often grows when we try to figure out everything ourselves. God invites you to lean on Him and let Him direct your steps.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Encouragement: Much of our fear lives in tomorrow. God gives grace for today, and He is already waiting in our tomorrow.

A Final Word of Encouragement

Fear tends to shout, but God speaks with a steady voice. It tells us the worst will happen. He reminds us that He is already there, and that He has not lost control.

You may not be able to change what you are facing. But you can change who you are facing it with. The God who parted the sea, who walked on the waves, and who conquered the grave is the same God who holds you today.

Bring Him your fears one at a time. Let His Word quiet your heart. And take the next step, not because the fear is gone, but because He is with you.
