2 Corinthians 12:7-9
Being Grateful Even When God Says No

6-Day Devotional based on this sermon

Day 1: When God Says “No”

Scripture And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness”. 2 Corinthians 12:9

Commentary We don’t like hearing “no,” especially from God. It can feel confusing, even painful. Paul pleaded for relief, yet God answered differently than expected. Not with removal, but with grace. What if God’s “no” isn’t rejection, but protection? What if it’s not the end of the story, but a redirection? Like a loving Father, He sees what we cannot. Sometimes the very thing we want removed is the tool He’s using to shape us. His grace doesn’t always change our situation—but it always strengthens us within it. Could it be that His “no” is actually a deeper “yes”?

Prayer: Father, help me trust You when Your answer is not what I hoped for. Teach me to see Your love even in denial. Let Your grace be enough for me today. Amen.

Day 2: God Always Answers

Scripture For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Matthew 7:8

Commentary Does God really answer every prayer? Yes, but not always the way we expect. Sometimes He says yes. Sometimes He says wait. Sometimes He says no. But every answer is intentional. Think of a parent—would they give a child everything they ask for? Of course not. Love requires wisdom. God’s answers are shaped by His perfect knowledge, not our limited perspective. When heaven feels silent, it’s not absence—it’s purpose. He hears every word, every whisper, every tear. The question isn’t whether God answers, but whether we trust His answer. Will you believe that His response, whatever it is, is always good?

Prayer: Lord, help me trust that You hear me. Give me peace in Your answers, even when I don’t understand them. Strengthen my faith in Your perfect will. Amen.

Day 3: When God Says “Wait”

Scripture He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble…      Psalm 91:15

Commentary Waiting is one of the hardest parts of faith. We pray, we believe, and yet—nothing seems to change. But God’s delays are not denials. They are divine timing. A seed doesn’t grow the moment it’s planted. There’s a hidden process beneath the surface. Could it be that God is working in ways you cannot see? In the waiting, He is shaping your heart, strengthening your faith, preparing your future. You may feel forgotten, but you are not. He promises to be with you in the waiting. And when the time is right, what He brings will be worth it.

Prayer: God, give me patience when I want things now. Help me trust Your timing over mine. Remind me that You are working, even when I cannot see it. Amen.

Day 4: Your Thorn Has Purpose

Scripture “And lest I should be exalted above measure… a thorn in the flesh was given to me…” 2 Corinthians 12:7

Commentary We all have a thorn—something painful, persistent, and personal. Paul’s thorn wasn’t removed, but it was redeemed. Isn’t it interesting that God didn’t explain it—He used it. Why? Because the thorn kept Paul dependent on grace. Maybe your thorn isn’t random. Maybe it’s purposeful. Whether it’s physical, emotional, spiritual, or relational—God can use it. If Scripture had defined Paul’s thorn, we might limit its application. But because it didn’t, it speaks to all of us. Your struggle doesn’t disqualify you—it can deepen you. What if the very thing you wish away is the thing drawing you closer to Him?

Prayer: Lord, I bring You my thorn. Help me stop fighting it and start trusting You through it. Use it to shape me and draw me nearer to Your heart. Amen.

Day 5: Trust the Author

Scripture “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. Isaiah 55:8

Commentary We all have a story in mind for our lives. We picture how it should go—joy, stability, and happy endings. But then God edits the script. A chapter we didn’t expect. A loss we didn’t plan. A delay we didn’t choose. What do we do when God rewrites our story? Do we resist or trust? He is the Author and the Finisher. He sees the whole picture—we only see a page. His edits are not mistakes; they are masterpieces in progress. When life doesn’t make sense, remember this: the Author is good. And He is still writing.

Prayer: Father, help me trust You with my story. Even when I don’t understand the edits, remind me that You are good and faithful. I place my life in Your hands. Amen.

Day 6: Not My Will, But Yours

Scripture “Nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” Luke 22:42

Commentary
This may be the hardest prayer to pray. Jesus Himself prayed it in the garden, facing unimaginable suffering. He was honest about His desire—but surrendered to the Father’s will. That’s the tension of faith. We bring our requests, our pain, our hopes—but we release control. True peace comes not when we get our way, but when we trust His. Surrender isn’t weakness—it’s trust in action. It’s saying, “God, I believe You know better than I do.” And in that place of surrender, we find strength. Could it be that your breakthrough begins where your will ends?

Prayer: Jesus, teach me to surrender like You did. Help me trust the Father’s will above my own. Give me peace in letting go and strength in trusting You. Amen.
